Waste Collection Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Why did Riverside choose Rumpke as the service provider?
    • The City selected Rumpke as the provider for residential waste collection through a competitive joint-bidding process. Rumpke was the only company to submit a bid. Their bid response was evaluated and deemed fair and reasonable.
  • How does waste collection work?
    • All residential properties are required to have waste collection services. Rumpke is the designated provider for trash and recycling. Rumpke supplies each resident with one trash can and one recycling can. The City includes the waste collection fee on residents’ combined utility bill, which also covers the stormwater utility fee.
  • I do not use trash service—why is service required?
    • Universal trash service benefits residents by providing convenient and cost-effective waste disposal. It reduces health risks associated with improper waste management, lowers the risk of water contamination, and helps keep the community clean.
  • Can I use my own containers?
    • Rumpke requires that all trash and recycling be placed in a cart issued by Rumpke for pickup. Their trucks are designed to service only these carts, so trash and recycling in other containers cannot be collected.
  • What happens if my trash/recycling is not picked up?
    • If your trash or recycling service was missed, please contact the City at 937-233-1801 (Option 2) or email utilitybilling@riversideoh.gov. Our staff will contact Rumpke to inform them about the missed pickup.
  • When is my waste collection pickup day?
    • Waste collection days vary by location and can be checked by contacting Rumpke at 800-828-8171 or www.rumpke.com.
  • What day will my trash/recycling be picked up if there is a holiday?
    • For personalized holiday schedule information and to check if your service is delayed, visit the Rumpke website and enter your ZIP code.
  • How much trash can I set at the curb for pickup?
    • Trash and recycling must be fully contained within the designated containers (Rumpke-provided), and containers must not exceed 50 pounds. Each resident receives one trash container and one recycling container at no cost. Materials not placed inside the container will not be picked up.
    • Rumpke will also pick up one bulk item per week with no call-ahead needed. Bulk items must be properly prepared (e.g., upholstered items should be wrapped in plastic). You can find out how to prepare your bulk item for pickup by calling Rumpke at 800-828-8171 or visiting www.rumpke.com.
  • What if I need additional trash/recycling containers?
    • If additional containers are needed, they can be rented for $19.50 per quarter for 65-gallon containers and $21.00 per quarter for 95-gallon containers. Please click here to access the request form.
  • How do I dispose of a large item that does not fit in the container, like a couch or refrigerator?
    • Residents may place one large item, called a “bulk pickup,” at the curb along with their regular trash and recycling, with no prior scheduling needed.
    • Please note that some items require special preparation before Rumpke can collect them. For example, mattresses and upholstered furniture must be fully wrapped in plastic, and appliances containing refrigerants (such as Freon) must have the refrigerant removed, which requires special handling. To learn how to prepare your bulk item for pickup, call Rumpke at 800-828-8171 or visit www.rumpke.com.
  • When should my trash and recycling be at the curb for collection?
    • Please place containers at the curb the night before your scheduled collection day.
  • What do I do with yard waste?
    • Yard waste, such as leaves and grass clippings, can be mixed with your regular trash in your provided trash container. Montgomery County Environmental Services also accepts yard waste. For more information, please visit Montgomery County’s website. From October 1 to November 30, the provider collects up to five bags of leaves at no extra charge. Bags may be placed inside the container or at the curb.
  • I still have a Republic Services trash/recycling container. Can I use it?
    • No. Rumpke cannot service another provider’s containers.
  • What are the dimensions of the containers?
    • Rumpke’s 65-gallon container measures 41.5 inches tall, 24 inches wide, and 27 inches deep. Rumpke’s 95-gallon toter is 46 inches tall, 26 inches wide, and 34.5 inches deep.
